The former Vezina winner opens up about the painful family circumstances and personal turmoil that fueled his sudden departure, offering a vulnerable farewell before returning to Winnipeg.
Former Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck has shared a heartfelt letter addressed to Jets fans. He posted the message on his social media on Wednesday, acknowledging the frustration surrounding his departure and explaining why he felt a change was necessary after 11 seasons with the club.
The 33-year-old netminder, who was traded to the New Jersey Devils on Oct. 23, recognized the disappointment surrounding his departure while revealing that difficult family circumstances played a role in his decision.

Hellebuyck explained that his family's well-being ultimately took priority, although he stopped short of revealing the specific circumstances behind his request.
"There were several considerations that went into my decision, including some very challenging circumstances involving my family. After a lot of thought and discussion, we ultimately felt that making a change was the best thing for our family. We've chosen to keep those personal circumstances private, and I hope people can respect that."
The message comes less than two weeks after Hellebuyck was dealt to New Jersey following a turbulent offseason that saw him request a trade and subsequently miss training camp.
Beyond addressing his departure, Hellebuyck reflected fondly on his years in Manitoba, particularly the friendships his family developed and his appreciation for the province's outdoors.
"When I think about my years in Winnipeg, I'll always be grateful for the life my family and I built there and for the people who became such an important part of it," he wrote. "It's where I grew as a player and where we started our family."
The three-time Vezina Trophy winner also thanked Jets president Mark Chipman, general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff, his former teammates, coaches and staff for their support throughout his career.
Hellebuyck concluded his letter with a message of gratitude toward the Winnipeg community ahead of his anticipated return to Canada Life Centre on Nov. 10.
"To the great Jets fans who supported me and my family, thank you. I'll never forget the pride I felt representing Winnipeg, and I wish the Jets and the entire community nothing but the best."
