The Swift Current Broncos have named Taras McEwen as an assistant coach.

This past week, another member of the now departed Winnipeg ICE has found a new home for the 2023-24 Western Hockey League season.

Taras McEwen - former ICE scout/assistant coach - will join the Swift Current Broncos as a member of its coaching staff. He will fill one of the assistant coaching positions on the team that formerly employed his father, Brad (as an assistant coach, head coach and general manager from 1998-2003) following the younger McEwen's six-year run with the ICE.

“We are excited to add Taras to our coaching staff,” said Broncos general manager Chad Leslie. “He is an excellent fit for us in many regards and has had a tremendous amount of playoff experience to draw from.”

Coming to Winnipeg with the ICE from Cranbrook, British Columbia in 2019, the Whitewood, Saskatchewan product has always found a way to maintain his high-level coaching, even while serving as a WHL scout within the ICE's system.

Getting his head coaching start with Fort Knox of the Prairie Junior Hockey League in 2015, McEwen worked his way through the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's benches before Kootenay's move east brought him to the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

The now 32-year-old was named general manager of the MJHL's Winnipeg Blues for the 2019-20 season, before adding head coaching duties to his task list the following season.

After two years as head coach/GM of the 50 Below Sports + Entertainment owned Blues, McEwen was awarded an assistant coaching position alongside head coach James Patrick with the ICE for 2022-23.

“We would like to extend a warm welcome to Taras, accompanied by his wife Emma, and their children Reid and Rhen, as they become part of the Bronco Family,” Leslie added.
