    Former WHA Winnipeg Jets forward Mats Lindh passes away at age 77 in Sweden. 

    Mats Lindh, the former Winnipeg Jets forward and beloved Västra Frölunda HC figure, passed away on August 8, 2025, in Göteborg, Sweden. He was 77 years old.

    Lindh carved out a distinguished hockey career, both in Sweden’s top leagues and abroad. Over nine seasons with Frölunda, he recorded 200 points in 247 games with 97 goals and dishing out 103 assists.

    Internationally, Lindh represented Sweden on several world stages with his biggest appearances being the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo and a World Championship bronze medal in 1972 and 1975. 

    His North American tenure came with the World Hockey Association’s Winnipeg Jets, where he played two seasons (1975–76 and 1976–77). In 138 regular-season games, he contributed 33 goals and 32 assists for 65 points, boasting 14 penalty minutes . In the playoffs, he added four goals and nine assists in 33 games, playing a role in the Jets’ Avco Cup (WHA) championship in 1976. 

    Off the ice, Lindh made a lasting impact in Göteborg. After retiring in 1982 due to injury, he played a key role in founding a hockey high school program through Frölunda HC, dedicated to developing the next generation of players.

    Frölunda HC offered a heartfelt tribute: “Mats was a quiet but perceptive player, he was seldom noticed off the ice, but on it, his intelligence and leadership spoke volumes. He was a wonderful teammate. This is deeply sorrowful news,” said former teammate Anders Broström.
