Former Winnipeg Jets forward Patrik Laine to receive help from the NHLPA Player Assistance Program.

Carter Brooks Winnipeg Jets Postgame Report

Patrik Laine has had a tough go of things since leaving the Winnipeg Jets. On Sunday, it was announced that the former 44-goal scorer would be receiving professional help from the NHLPA Player Assistance Program.

According to the NHL Players' Association, Laine will be unavailable to the Columbus Blue Jackets for "an indefinite period of time while he receives care".

The program operates as such that he will receive clearance to return to the ice with his team once deemed fit by the NHLPA's program administrators.

On Sunday, the 25-year-old Finn shared the following statement to his Instagram page:

"I wanted to take a moment to address my need to step away from the game for a while. After careful consideration and discussions with my support network and the team, I have recognized the importance of prioritizing my mental health and well-being. Hockey has been my passion and my life, but I have come to realize that in order to perform at my best, I need to take this time to focus on myself.

"I am grateful for the understanding and support of my team, the League, and our fans during this time. I look forward to returning to the ice with a clear mind and renewed energy. Thank you for respecting my privacy during this time and for your continued support.

"With love, Patty."

Following his back-to-back 82-game seasons with Winnipeg form 2017-19, Prime Laine has fallen off the map. He has never surpassed 56 games with the Blue Jackets and is now in his fourth year in Ohio.

He suffered two injuries thus far in the 2023-24 season, while putting up six goals and nine points in just 18 games played. Laine has never been able to replicate his offensive success found in the early stages of career with the Jets.

"Patrik has our complete support, and our sole concern is his well-being,” Blue Jackets' general manager Jarmo Kekalainen said. “Out of respect for Patrik, we will have no further comment.”
