In what was a physical and feisty affair in Game 5, Winnipeg Jets HC Scott Arniel and St. Louis Blues HC Jim Montgomery exchanged choice words in the press conferences following the Jets' 5-3 win.
The Jets secured the series lead but lost Mark Scheifele in the process. He was the recipient of a controversial hit from Brayden Schenn, but Arniel was adamant that the injury Scheifele suffered was from that hit, dismissing Montgomery's comments.
"Well, I didn’t know Monty got his medical degree, trying to say how our player got hurt. He’s way off base, should not make that comment," said Arniel. "There's some things that have been going on in this series, and that was a repeat of what we've seen before. A player leaving his feet and hitting the player in a very unprotected spot. In the sense of almost blindsiding him."
Montgomery thoroughly disagreed, claiming the injury Scheifele suffered came from a hit thrown by Radek Faksa.
"And let's make it clear, 55 got hurt from the Faksa hit," said Montgomery. "He played six minutes after the Schenn hit. He didn't come back after he got rocked by Faksa."
At the moment, the extent of the injury Scheifele has sustained is unknown, and unsurprisingly, the Jets are holding all the information behind closed doors. What has been released to the public is that the NHL will not be reviewing the hit by Schenn, and no supplemental discipline will be handed out.
The Jets travel to St. Louis for Game 6 on Friday, looking to close out the series. They have lost both road games this series, and trying to close out the series without their second-leading goal and point scorer will be a difficult task.
