The Winnipeg Jets are moving on.
After falling behind 2-0 and 3-1 to the visiting St. Louis Blues at two points in the winner-take-all seventh game of the opening round Stanley Cup Playoff series, Winnipeg battled back for an overtime victory on home ice.
Entering the series-decider as the Presidents’ Trophy winners for having the best regular season record, Winnipeg relied on two deflection goals from Cole Perfetti to lead the comeback.
His second strike of the game came with just 1.6 seconds remaining and Connor Hellebuyck on the bench for the extra attacker.
Captain Adam Lowry scored the winner, sending the Jets to the second round where they will face the Dallas Stars.
"It's pretty cool. It's kind of what you dream of," Perfetti said post-game. "Playing in a Game 7. First time ever doing that, it was awesome playing in front of this crowd. It was incredible tonight.... Again, no quit. Guys were exhausted but fought until the last second and we got it done."
Down Mark Scheifele (upper-body injury), the Jets also lost fellow alternate captain Josh Morrissey just 10 minutes into the first period due to an upper-body ailment of his own.
Winnipeg played a pathetic opening period, as the Blues scored twice in the early stages, before knocking the Jets' top defenceman, Josh Morrissey, out of the game with an injury.
Jordan Kyrou got the visitors on the board just 1:10 into the match with a give-and-go play with Colton Parayko. Mathieu Joseph then silenced the home crowd with his first goal of the playoffs, picking up a Kyle Connor turnover before skating in and putting a soft wrist shot through Connor Hellebuyck.
Winnipeg was outshot 7-3 in the first period and outscored 2-0, while losing its best defenceman, after entering the game down its best forward.
Not the start the Jets were looking for.
St. Louis came out slow to start the middle stanza, but Winnipeg was unable to capitalize. The Jets tied things up on the shot chart five minutes into the frame, but were unable to find a way to get the puck past Jordan Binnington.
Finally, Winnipeg was able to find some daylight, but it took a 5-on-4 advantage. With Oskar Sundqvist in the box for slashing, the Jets made quick work of their first man advantage.
With Morrissey and Scheifele missing in action, the makeshift unit scored in just seven seconds.
Gabe Vilardi won the face-off, Neal Pionk dished the puck to Kyle Connor, whose shot-pass was directed perfectly by Perfetti past Binnington.
The goal brought the Jets' faithful to life, but the excitement did not last long. Radek Faksa scored on an odd-man rush with just 34 seconds remaining, snuffing out Winnipeg's second period spark.
In need of a the team's biggest third period of the year, the Jets needed nearly the full 20 minutes to make it count.
Winnipeg called its 30-second timeout with 3:14 to play and sat Hellebuyck down on the bench for the extra attacker.
Vlad Namestnikov scored with 1:56 to go, bringing the Jets to within one goal. Then, it was Perfetti, whose second of the game came with just 1.6 seconds left to play, sending it to overtime amid a deafening roar.
“It was great," Connor said of the message between the second and third periods. "Guys were upbeat. Champing at the bit. There wasn’t one point where guys didn’t believe in here. Guys just kept playing, kept fighting.”
Ehlers and Perfetti had the best chances for Winnipeg, while Philip Broberg’s stick let him down on the Blues’ best chance. The Jets were unable to score on a Brayden Schenn delay-of-game penalty early in the extra frame.
As such, the first period of overtime solved nothing, so a second 20-minute sudden death overtime period was required.
This one needed 16:30 to find a winner. And it was Lowry who redirected a Neal Pionk point shot, deflecting it past Binnington for the series-winner.
Fittingly, it was Pionk who hammered the puck to the net, as he skated in an incredible 46:15 - the first defenceman to play in over 40 minutes since Al MacInnis and Chris Pronger in 1999.
“They all did fantastic," Connor said of his defencemen. "Losing JMo, he’s one of our best back there; he plays a lot of minutes for us, PP, PK, controls the flow of the game back there. And those guys down a man stepped up and did a great job.”
Connor Hellebuyck finished the night with 26 saves on 29 shots, while Binnington made 43 stops on 47 Jets shots.
Winnipeg will face the Stars in the second round. Game 1 will be played on Wednesday night.
