Winnipeg builds on its historic comeback as Dawson Mercer nets his first goal in a dominant victory, ending a losing skid while preparing for a high-stakes homestand.
The Winnipeg Jets are streaking!
After nine-straight losses, the Jets have bounced back with back-to-back victories.
Fresh off the heels of the most dramatic comeback in franchise history - not to mention a league record for the latest four-goal comeback - in their 5-4 overtime victory in Montreal on Tuesday, the Jets took care of business against the visiting Vancouver Canucks on Thursday by way of a 6-2 final.
Sure, Vancouver is the league's very worst team, but the Jets actually made them look it on Thursday.
Photo by James Carey Lauder/Game On Magazine Winnipeg jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first period before adding another two in the second. The Jets closed things out with one final tally before the night came to an end.
Viggo Bjorck finally picked up his first career NHL point, while Dawson Mercer collected his first goal as a member of the Jets - as a part of a two-point affair for the key piece in the Connor Hellebuyck trade last month.
“Yeah, it was fun," Bjorck said post-game. "I felt like it should have come a couple games earlier, but eventually it came here.”
Winnipeg got things going just 3:49 into the game, as Alex Iafallo perfectly redirected Haydn Fleury's power play point shot, giving the Jets an early lead.
Then just 14 seconds later, Morgan Barron found Cole Koepke, whose dribbler also found its way through Leevi Meralainen, giving Winnipeg two goals in just over four minutes of game action.
The Canucks did get one back midway through the frame, but Winnipeg immediately responded with Mercer's first as as Jet.
The middle stanza provided net front goals from Neal Pionk and Mark Scheifele, who both crashed hard into the goal mouth before banging home their fourth and third goals of the season, respectively.
Winnipeg led 5-1 after 40 minutes and pulled ahead 22-18 on the shot chart entering the final frame.
Mario Ferraro put the cherry on top with 8:28 to play, as he ripped the final goal of the game for Winnipeg past Meralainen.
Brock Boeser got one back for Vancouver, scoring the 6-2 marker with 4:51 to play, but that was as close as the visitors would come.
Stuart Skinner turned aside 24 of the 26 shots he faced on the night, while Meralainen made just 23 stops for Vancouver on Thursday.
“It’s good with some change," Bjorck said of skating on the wing. "Maybe it wasn’t working that well for a couple games there. But it’s just good to switch things up. I felt like playing with Lowry and Barron, two very solid, 200-foot guys, so it’s been nice.”
A much bigger test awaits the Jets this weekend, however, as Tampa Bay visits Canada Life Centre on Sunday, before Connor Hellebuyck makes his return to Manitoba with the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.
