The National Hockey League has announced its list of 22 players to whom has elected to take their respective teams to salary arbitration hearings, should they not reach contract agreements prior to their scheduled dates.
The dates, however, have not yet been released for the individual player hearings in Toronto. According to the NHL Players' Association, hearings will take place between July 20 and August 4.
Players electing for salary arbitration are now forbidden from accepting their qualifying offers, while also no longer being eligible to sign offer sheets from other clubs.
From the Jets, both Barron and newcomer Vilardi have chosen to go the arbitration route.
Typically a rather gruelling process, the player and his representatives speak to an independent arbitrator pleading his case for higher contract. The team and its representatives speak against the player's desires, pushing for a lower range contract, while pointing out the player's flaws and reasons for a cheaper deal.
Should the arbitrator decide on a salary higher than $4.538 million, the team has the ability to decline the deal and allow the player to walk into unrestricted free agency.
Typically, teams and players are able to come to some sort of contract agreement before the scheduled arbitration hearings occur. Should that happen, it would save Winnipeg the headache of starting off on the wrong foot with a newcomer.
Arbitrators can award both one and two-year contracts, with the party that didn't elect the arbitration selecting the term. If a player is only one year away from qualifying as a UFA, only one year can be awarded.
