The Winnipeg Jets are heading into the offseason with multiple pending free agents, including six unrestricted free agents.
The Daily Faceoff released their top 50 pending UFAs list, which included five Jets players. Topping the list was unsurprisingly Mitch Marner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, but a pair of Jets found their names in the top 10.
Neal Pionk was ranked fifth, followed closely by Nikolaj Ehlers, who ranked seventh. Pionk is an established, puck-moving, right-handed defenseman with experience running a power play, traits most NHL teams tend to be looking for.
Ehlers will be one of the most sought-after forwards if Marner does not hit free agency. Rumours have swirled for quite some time about the Jets exploring trades involving Ehlers and that he could be tempted to test the free-agent market. Some have felt that the 29-year-old has been under-utilized in his Jets tenure and that his productivity could increase if his ice time did.
The next wave of Jets players on the list were Alex Iafallo at 31, Brandon Tanev at 32 and Mason Appleton at 37. The trio of forwards are bottom-six players for the Jets, although Iafallo has fit in nicely on the top line in Gabriel Vilardi's absence. Haydn Fleury is another pending UFA but he did not find his way onto the list.
The Jets front office has been very quiet about their plans heading into the offseason, maintaining their stance that they are focused on the playoffs and the results will determine what they elect to do. With four additional RFAs, those being Vilardi, Dylan Samberg, Morgan Barron and Rasmus Kupari, the Jets are set for a busy offseason, whether they make changes to the roster or attempt to re-sign as many players as possible.
