Forward Nino Niederreiter and the Winnipeg Jets have come to an agreement on a three-year, $12 million contract extension to be begin next season.
The deal will pay the veteran forward an average annual value of $3 million per season.
Niederreiter, 31, has suited up in all 23 games for the Jets this season, and has six goals, 14 points and eight penalty minutes after joining Winnipeg at the 2022-23 NHL trade deadline.
He had previously made his intentions known that he wants to remain in Winnipeg, and on Monday that news became official.
As they say, timing is everything for the Swiss.
Originally selected fifth overall in the first round of the 2010 NHL Draft by the New York Islanders, Niederreiter has since suited up in 833 games for the Islanders, Minnesota Wild, Carolina Hurricanes, Nashville Predators, and now Winnipeg. He has 423 points (211G, 212A) and 382 penalty minutes to his name.
After a quick tour of Winnipeg in the later stages of the 2022-23 season, Niederreiter determined he liked Winnipeg and was willing to sign an extension in the offseason. His strong play to start the 2023-24 campaign put an exclamation mark on that point, and by the quarter-season mark he has agreed to remain in Winnipeg through 2027.
There is nothing like Swiss timing.
