The Washington Capitals have announced the signing of defenceman Dylan McIlrath.
The veteran blueliner agreed to a two-year extension worth a total of $1.6 million. He will make $800K annually.
Serving as a shutdown defender for the Capitals, McIlrath has had a tough time finding a consistent role with Washington. When on the ice, he provides a big body (6-foot-5, 240 pounds) and is more than willing to throw down with fellow combatants.
The Winnipeg product has registered two helpers in 11 games this season for Washington, after spending the majority of the past number of years in the minors. He has won the Calder Cup three times with Grand Rapids and Hershey, serving as team captain on multiple occasions.
Selected 10th overall in the 2010 NHL Draft, McIlrath has three goals and nine points in 86 career games to go alongside 147 penalty minutes. He has another 30 goals, 122 points and 1,204 penalty minutes in 618 AHL contests.
