There was very minimal doubt that defenseman Matthew Schaefer was going to be a star in the NHL, but I don’t think many expected him to get acclimated this quickly and make the impact he has with the New York Islanders.
On Saturday night, Schaefer extended his point streak to five games, achieving history in the process. After recording a point in his first five games, Schaefer became the youngest player in NHL history to begin his career with a five-game point streak.
After starting the season in a third-pairing role with Scott Mayfield and logging 17:15 TOI in his debut, Schaefer has swiftly earned the respect of Head Coach Patrick Roy. The elite skating defenseman is averaging the most TOI amongst all Islanders players with 22:01.
The Islanders are in action Tuesday night against the winless San Jose Sharks. Will the former Erie Otter star extend his point streak to six games?
Schaefer's NHL-Record Point Streak Continues In Islanders' 5-4 Comeback Win Over Senators
The Islanders never led against Ottawa until the clock showed 1:03 to play in the third, beating the Senators 5-4 for their first comeback win of the season.
