The Saginaw Spirit have won their second game in two matches in the Memorial Cup, this one against the QMJHL Champions.
The Saginaw Spirit started the game against Drummondville very differently than they started the game against Moose Jaw. Saginaw got up to a quick 4-0 in their first Memorial Cup game versus Moose Jaw, but they were down early against the Drummondville Voltigeurs.
The Spirit were down 2-0 at the first intermission, giving Saginaw their first road block of the Memorial Cup tournament. Winning against the Voltigeurs was not going to be a walk in the park, and the QMJHL Champions pushed hard all game long.
Saginaw never gave up in this game, and their relentlessness is what earned them the 4-3 win in the end.
As we have talked about all season, the Saginaw Spirit have one of the best depth charts in major junior hockey. They get different performers to step up in every single game.
In this game, it was Minnesota Wild prospect Hunter Haight, and exceptional status forward Michael Misa.
Haight scored Saginaw's second goal of the game, tying the match at two a piece near the end of the second period. His first came off of a nifty cross-crease feed from 2007-born forward Michael Misa, as Haight was able to tap it into the back of the wide-open cage.
Drummondville was able to get another goal back before the end of the second, and the Spirit headed to the dressing room down in the game — for the second time. Intermission talks proved to motivate the Spirit in this game, as they seemed to reach a new gear every time they jumped onto a fresh sheet of ice in this game.
Almost six minutes into the third, Nic Sima tied the game at three with his second goal of the tournament.
The game winning goal came from a familiar duo.
Joey Willis entered the offensive zone and fired a shot on the Voltigeurs goaltender, which was deflected into the right corner. Michael Misa was able to find the loose puck, gain control, and quickly snap a clean pass through the middle of the ice to find Hunter Haight — again.
The Minnesota Wild draft pick made no mistake, burying the game winning goal off of a beautiful feed from top 2025 NHL Draft prospect Michael Misa. Misa was awarded the Player of the Game award at the end of this game, tallying three assists.
The Saginaw Spirit are now 2-0 in the Memorial Cup — something that not many saw coming. The Western Conference finalists were able to defeat the QMJHL Champions and the WHL Champions with outstanding performances.
The Spirit really are able to get offensive production from everywhere in their lineup, and that is proving to be a lethal asset. Their next game comes against their OHL Western Conference rival — the London Knights.
Saginaw will play the London Knights on Wednesday, May 29th, in the last game of the Memorial Cup round robin.
