The Saginaw Spirit have taken the final win, as they hoist the most prestigious trophy in junior hockey — the Memorial Cup.
Every elimination game has a hero, early in the game it looked like it would be Owen Beck, Easton Cowan had some moments in this game, and so did Michael Simpson. In the end, it was Josh Bloom who played the hero in this game.
Saginaw had a quick start to this game, getting up 1-0 early in the first period. The Knights had a poor first period, only putting up one shot and allowing the Spirit to dominate.
Landon Sim's ejection set a tone in this game, and it sparked a light in the Spirit's offence. Saginaw was able to get up 3-0 in this game — then London stormed back.
The Knights were able to make this a 3-3 game with less than ten minutes left in the third period, thanks to Easton Cowan and Sam Dickinson. The momentum began to swing in London's favour, after a very slow start.
The clock began to wind down in a hurry, with the game tied late in the third. There was a feeling that both sides didn't want to give up much, but an icing by Sam Dickinson with a tired group on the ice for the Knights inevitably called the game.
The Saginaw Spirit were able to keep the puck hemmed into the Knights zone for an extended period of time, and a loft of the puck towards the net by Jorian Donovan began to bounce. Canucks prospect Josh Bloom was parked in front of the net, as he was able to help direct the puck across the goal line with just 22 seconds left in the game.
Saginaw has won the CHL's greatest prize — the Memorial Cup. The tournament hosts came in with ultra-confidence, defeating Moose Jaw and Drummondville in the first two games of the round robin. They were surely ready to go after their round robin loss to the London Knights, and they got their revenge in the final game.
The Spirit get the final say in the best rivalry in the OHL this season. Though London came out with more wins, Saginaw clinched the most important one.
The Saginaw Spirit have made history, winning their first Memorial Cup trophy in their first ever Memorial Cup tournament. They have accomplished what all the other 59 teams in the CHL strive to accomplish, as they hoist the Memorial Cup after a final win against the London Knights.
