The Anaheim Ducks have traded Jacob Perreault to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Jan Mysak in a minor league deal, with two former OHL Alumni.
Two minor league NHL prospects have been swapped for one another in a one-for-one deal. Montreal Canadiens prospect Jan Mysak has been traded to Anaheim for Jacob Perreault.
Jan Mysak and Jacob Perreault both played in the OHL, and were top players in the league at one time. These are two highly-touted NHL prospects who have been playing in the AHL for the majority of this season.
Jan Mysak played in the OHL with the Bulldogs — who were located in Hamilton at the time. He won the OHL Championship with the club in 2022, putting up 64 points in 61 games that regular season. That championship-winning team had a lot of big names on it — so many so that Mysak was playing mostly on the third line.
He's a straight-line, two-way centre with high hockey sense. He is determined when he has the puck on his stick and nothing stands in his way. Mysak can play just about anywhere in the lineup, making him a valuable utility prospect.
The other prospect in this deal is Jacob Perreault, who played with the Sarnia Sting in the OHL. Perreault played in two full seasons with the Sting before his junior career was ended due to the COVID pandemic in 2020. Perreault then began his pro career in the AHL.
Perreault has played one NHL game, and that was in the 2021-2022 season. He has 18 points in 31 games this season with San Diego in the AHL.
Jacob Perreault has a lightning shot release, and that is what made him successful at the major junior level. That elite shot hasn't exactly translated to the professional level seamlessly, and it has made it difficult for him to find his footing.
Mysak and Perreault will each get a new opportunity in different systems, and maybe these new environments will allow them to find their footing at the professional level.
This is a low-risk trade for both sides, and it benefits the players involved tremendously.
