Last night, the Oshawa Generals defeated the Ottawa 67's 3-2 after a three-round shootout. Calum Ritchie snatched the victory for the Generals on a nasty shootout move that left Collin Mackenzie and the whole building in the lurch.
While the Colorado Avalanche prospect played a strong game, it was his linemate Beckett Sennecke who scored a goal and added an assist to finish the night with 100 percent participation in Oshawa's scoring.
Sennecke's two-point night continues what has been a dominant season. In 16 games, the third-overall pick has 13 goals and 12 assists for 25 points. What's more impressive is that 22 of those points were scored in his last 10 games.
Sennecke is easily the hottest player in the OHL right now. In his last 10 games, he has averaged 2.2 points per game. That's higher than Michael Misa (1.9), Porter Martone (2.0) and Carson Rehkopf (1.9) over the same number of games.
The contest between Oshawa and Ottawa turned out to be a thrilling back-and-forth game that reflects the rivalry that has developed between the two teams over the last few years.
It was Sennecke who gave the Generals a 2-1 lead heading into the third period. Late in the period, Calgary Flames prospect, Henry Mews, scored to tie the game and force overtime.
When overtime couldn't solve anything they went to a shootout, where Jacob Oster shut the door making all three saves allowing Calum Ritchie to net the winner.
It was a frustrating loss for the 67's who have shown a lot of grit and determination this season while keeping games close.
"I can't say enough about the work ethic of the team," said Head Coach Dave Cameron. "We are not getting rewarded for it because our execution is not good enough."
For Cameron, that execution extends beyond scoring. The powerplay failed to find the back of the net on six attempts and he thought his team was bobbling pucks in critical situations.
Of the 18 games Ottawa has played so far, 11 of them have ended with just one goal separating the two sides.
Ultimately Ottawa will need to get over the heartbreaking loss quickly as they face Owen Sound on Sunday. Oshawa meanwhile, will face a stern test against the Barrie Colts this evening.
