Brampton continues to add experience via trades

After acquiring Carson Rehkopf and completing the largest trade of the offseason so far, Brampton kept the ball rolling by acquiring Erie Otters captain Spencer Sova.

In exchange, Erie received the rights to Coben Bryan, a 2028 15th-round pick, and four conditional picks (2025 2nd (ER), 2026 4th (SAR), as well as Brampton's 2028 4th and 15th).

"We are pleased to announce the addition of Spencer Sova to our team," said Brampton Head Coach and GM James Richmond. "He's a character guy, a former captain in the OHL and a very strong skating defenseman that will help our team immensely this season."

Erie drafted Sova with the eigth-overall pick in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection. After three seasons in Erie, the defenseman scored a total of 98 points in 198 games played.

During the 2021-22 season, Sova was an alternate captain for Canada's U-18 Junior Championship team, where he recorded three assists in three games played.

At 20 years old, he brings all of his experience to a Brampton roster that found a lot of success last season despite its relative youth. He will join a D-corps that includes Seattle Kraken prospect Jakub Fibigr and Penguins prospect Finn Harding.

At all three positions, this Brampton roster is brimming with talent. They finished last season second in their division, missing out on the top spot by a mere three points.

While their youthful energy and skill played a large role in their regular season success, Richmond also thinks it was a hindrance when it came to the playoffs.

In back-to-back acquisitions, Brampton has exchanged draft picks for players with experience. Sova will have the opportunity to bring all of his leadership and knowledge to a team that is ready to take off if given a push in the right direction.

Brampton is hoping that Carson Rehkopf and Sova can be part of giving the younger players the knowledge they need to become a dominant force in the OHL.
