Kitchener Rangers defenceman Hunter Brzustewicz has signed his three year entry-level contract with the Calgary Flames with an AAV of $950,000.

Brzustewicz was drafted in the third round by the Vancouver Canucks last June at the NHL Draft, but his rights were recently traded to Calgary. He was involved in the trade that sent Elias Lindholm to Vancouver.

As of today, he is officially property of the Calgary Flames after signing his entry-level deal.

Brzustewicz has been a top defender in the entire CHL this season. He is second among defencemen in scoring with 85 points in 62 games — trailing only Zayne Parekh.

He has been the heart and soul of the Kitchener Rangers this year from the back end. Not only does he lead off the ice, but he leads on the ice too with his style of play.

Brzustewicz always seems to be the director of traffic when his team has possession of the puck. He dictates the breakouts, offensive zone entries, and creates passing plays. He does a lot of this himself too, despite being a defenceman.

He's a very smart, highly projectable defenceman to the next level. The Calgary Flames may have just inked the next Adam Fox-type of defenceman.

In recent years, the Flames have built a culture involving a lot of big, strong defenders on the back end. They like to have a few players on the blue line that can intimidate with their physicality and shut things down defensively. Brzustewicz doesn't fit these roles, but he brings something very valuable that they don't quite have.

Brzustewicz is 6-foot-0 and 190-pounds, but he doesn't exactly play a "big" game. He is effective because of his ability to out-think opponents and create plays that are a step ahead of his opponents. Calgary doesn't have that high-end puck mover, breakout catalyst on the back-end, and Brzustewicz may just be that.

Brzustewicz is still just nineteen-years-old, but we may see him in the NHL a lot sooner than we originally thought.
