Kingston Frontenacs acquire Vegas Golden Knights draft pick Tuomas Uronen

On Tuesday, the Kingston Frontenacs acquired Tuomas Urnonen from the Ottawa 67's in exchange for a 2025 fourth-round pick and a conditional 2027 seventh-round pick.

"We're excited to add Tuomas to our organization," said Frontenacs GM Kory Cooper. "He has great offensive instincts and an elite shot. He should fit nicely into our system."

The Vegas Golden Knights drafted the Kerava native in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft after he scored 20 goals and 23 assists for 43 points in 39 games for HIFK U20 in Finland.

The following season, Uronen joined the Ottawa 67's. Unfortunately, Uronen suffered season ending injuries after only 11 games in Ottawa. In that time, Uronen scored two goals and added four assists for six points.

If Uronen had maintained his scoring pace, he would have recorded 37 points in 68 games. That would have placed him eighth in scoring on the Frontenacs.

It should be noted that all of Uronen's points last season came in a six-game span. It seems likely that given more time to adjust to the league, he would have been able to increase his scoring pace.

The trade represents a calculated gamble on the part of Cooper. If they have acquired Uronen at his floor, he will come in as a middle-six forward capable of being a solid contributor.

Alternatively, Kingston may have bought low on Uronen and acquired a player who can contribute at the top of their lineup. If that is the case, then Cooper will have made a great move to improve his team.

Kingston fans and Vegas Golden Knights fans will undoubtedly be cheering for the later.

For Ottawa, this trade allows them to free up roster space and make room for younger incoming players. Chase Yanni, a 2007-born forward, played 10 games for Ottawa last year and will likely be a full time addition next season.

They also add draft picks which the team can use to maintain their supply of young talent. Alternatively, they may seek to move these picks in a future deal.

Speculation aside, Uronen is a skilled forward with great hands and an accurate shot. While he is not a giant he is a good size at 6'0.

He will add scoring depth to a Kingston team that could have used a boost in that department last season.

Uronen will join fellow offseason acquisition Nolan Lalonde whom the Frontenacs acquired from the Memorial Cup Champion Saginaw Spirit earlier in the offseason.

If Uronen can stay healthy, he will likely play an important role for the Frontenacs next season.
