The Kingston Frontenacs have acquired, big, physical veteran defenceman Roman Schmidt from the Kitchener Rangers.
Schmidt was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 3rd round in 2021, and began this season with their AHL-affiliate the Syracuse Crunch. He played one game for them, putting up one assist.
With this trade, Kingston adds a much-needed veteran presence and minute-muncher to their inexperienced defence core, and Kitchener is able to solve their overage situation.
Schmidt will add some valuable experience to this group, and likely play some big minutes in all situations. He is a reliable force in the defensive end, and brings a huge physical presence. He is a tough customer to face when battling for pucks in the corners, and will make Kingston tougher to play against.
Kingston's current defence core doesn't seem to have a go-to penalty kill guy, or a player to rely on in tough defensive situations. Roman Schmidt will fill this role.
In return, Kitchener receives two high draft picks, which seems like an efficient return for the 6-foot-5 defenceman. Kitchener receives a 2nd round pick in 2026, and a 3rd round pick in 2027.
With this trade, Kitchener is finally able to solve their overage situation. Mitchell Martin has been injured for the past few weeks, and by trading Schmidt, the Rangers have made a position for when he returns.
Kitchener's other two overagers are currently Matthew Sop and Simon Motew.
This trade has it's benefits for both sides, but nonetheless this is a huge addition for the Frontenacs by adding an incredibly experienced, physical defender.
