The trade deadline is in full swing, as the Steelheads have acquired Dean Loukus from the Memorial Cup hosting Saginaw Spirit, in exchange for two draft picks.
Saginaw receives a 6th round pick (2024) and a 9th round pick (2027) from Mississauga in return.
Overage winger Dean Loukus is an assistant captain with the Spirit, and has been a consistent source of secondary offence. He has 26 points through 34 games this season.
Loukus adds a much-needed veteran presence to the Steelheads forward group, and he will bolster their offence. Mississauga's lineup has been cluttered with injuries as of late, and they have been missing some offensive impacts. Loukus will help in this category, and assist in insulating their young talent.
Saginaw is gearing up for their playoff run and Memorial Cup tournament in the coming months, and discarding Loukus is just another part of that process. The Spirit likely have more moves upcoming, and getting Loukus off the books creates room for another overage spot.
There will be several overagers shopped around the OHL before January 10th (Trade Deadline), and it looks like Saginaw will be in the market for one.
Per Jeff Marek yesterday, a trade sending Owen Beck to Saginaw was in the works. Beck is a 2004-born, and would not count as an overage player, therefore Saginaw may be looking to make multiple moves ahead of the deadline.
Nonetheless, Saginaw and Mississauga have now both dipped their toes into the trade market. Both teams likely have more moves coming — with Mississauga needing more offence, and an overage position open for Saginaw.
