Oshawa Generals Use Top Pick In 2026 CHL Import Draft On Czech Defenseman Matyas Michalek
Oshawa shores up their blueline with a potential top prospect for the 2028 NHL Draft
The Oshawa Generals have selected defenseman Matyas Michalek first overall in the 2026 CHL Import Draft.
Michalek, a 2028 NHL Draft eligible, is a 6'3 left-handed defenseman out of Czechia. Playing with the youth system of Czech club, Sparta Praha.
In 30 games in the Czech U17, Michalek had 13 goals and 39 points. Michalek had a goal and eight points in 18 games as a double underager with the club's U20 team.
Viewed as a potential top prospect in the 2028 Draft, the 16-year-old Michalek appeared with Czechia at the IIHF U18 World Championship, appearing in all seven games for the Czechs, who won bronze in the tournament.
A big, powerful defenseman, Michalek is a creative, puck-moving defenseman with a high level of offensive prowess. Michalek is a highly mature all-around defender who has show the ability to impact the game at both levels, tools that could quickly see him as a top-pairing defenseman on the team's blueline.
Michalek was selected in the seventh round of the USHL Futures Draft by the Chicago Steel. It's unknown if Michalek will choose one of those two paths, or remain in Czechia.
Having dealt Haoxi Wang last season to the Niagara IceDogs, the Generals have a hole with their top LHD option, making Michalek someone who, if he comes over, could quickly take on that role, and heavy minutes as a 16-year-old defenseman.
Oshawa is rebuilding with Michalek and 2026 OHL Priority Selection Kane Cloutier as the two names that the Generals will be hoping to bank on as impact stars for at least the next two years.
