The future is bright for Owen Sound Attack forward Pierce Mbuyi, who set a franchise record on Friday night for most points scored by a rookie.

Mbuyi scored two goals in the Attack's 7-2 win over Guelph, bringing his season total up to 28. In 59 games, he's posted 48 points beating out former record holders Joey Hishon and Winnipeg Jets prospect Colby Barlow.

Owen Sound drafted the Mississauga native seventh overall in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection after he scored 94 points in 55 games with Toronto Marlboros U-16 AAA. Mbuyi was second in points on the team trailing only Adam Valentini.

It's been a very solid season for the 2008-born rookie. He's the highest-scoring 2008-born player in the league sitting second in rookie scoring between Saginaw Spirit rookies Carson Harmer and Jacob Cloutier.

He also represented Canada Red at the U-17 World Hockey Championship where he scored a goal and added two assists to finish the tournament with three points in four games.

While Mbuyi has found individual success, Owen Sound's playoff ambitions are balanced on a knife's edge. They are tied with Sarnia for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, just one point behind the seventh place Sault. Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

With three games remaining in the regular season, every point matters for Owen Sound who will need a few more points to force their way into the postseason.

They play their next game on Thursday night in Barrie when they will have another opportunity to snag a few points. The new rookie scoring record holder will undoubtedly have a role to play in the coming games.
