Sawyer Boulton Suspended Indefinitely After Actions Against Soo Greyhounds Defenceman Matthew Virgilio

London Knights bottom-six forward Sawyer Boulton has been suspended indefinitely by the OHL after actions on Friday, February 16th against the Soo Greyhounds.

The incident specifically was targeted against defenceman Matthew Virgilio of the Greyhounds. Boulton received a 2 minute minor for instigator, a 5 minute major for fighting, and a game misconduct on the play.

This all occurred with less than five minutes remaining in the game, while the Greyhounds were up 8-2.

Leading up to the altercation, Virgilio gave Boulton a crosscheck in the mid-slot where he fell. Then Boulton proceeded to challenge Virgilio, by giving him some shoves after the play had left the zone. The two began to scrum and eventually dropped the gloves. Boulton dealt quite a few punches to the face of Virgilio, and violent ones at that.

Once Boulton had gotten Virgilio to the ground, he proceeded to throw one last punch and shove him into the boards before the referees were able to pull him away.

Boulton is a repeat offender this season. He was suspended in another game versus the Greyhounds, where he dealt a dirty hit to Soo captain Bryce McConnell-Barker that resulted in further injury.

Boulton has gained a reputation of being a dirty player in this league who can set the tone with his presence. Though he can create momentum for his team, he has taken it too far on occasions like this. Sawyer is the brother of Ryder Boulton, who also plays on the Knights. Sawyer has put up 4 points in 32 games this season, along with 47 penalty minutes with London.
