With today's injury to Tanner Molendyk, and Tristan Luneau out sick, Canada has called up Brantford Bulldogs defenceman Jorian Donovan to fill a defence spot.
In today's pre-tournament game versus Switzerland, Tanner Molendyk left the game with an upper-body injury. The extent of his injury is currently unknown, but Canada must be concerned with his timeline to return, as they have called up Jorian Donovan to fill a defence spot.
Jorian Donovan was invited, and participated in Canada's World Junior Selection Camp, but was cut from the final roster. Now he gets the call due to injury, and Donovan will have the opportunity to represent the red and white on the international stage.
In selection camp, and specifically in the two USports games, Donovan didn't look great. He looked shaky. He was turning over pucks and making poor decisions. Defensively, he looked lost positionally and didn't look confident in his own abilities.
If Donovan focuses on playing his own game, he can benefit this team. With the Brantford Bulldogs, Donovan has been an offensive catalyst. He likes to shoot the puck a lot, and carry it in transition.
Donovan currently has 8 goals and 26 points through 31 games for Brantford this season.
He plays with confidence in the OHL, but surely didn't play with confidence at Canada's camp. If Donovan can find his own groove and self-confidence, he will be able to generate some offence for this group.
If Molendyk is the defender ruled out of the tournament due to injury, Donovan may able to fulfill some of that offence that Molendyk would have provided.
An unfortunate injury in pre-tournament play has gotten Donovan the call, and now it is up to him to find a place where he can make an impact in this lineup.
