The Windsor Spitfires made their first overall pick on Thursday afternoon with Ethan Belchetz, and now the ball is in the court of the Sarnia Sting.
Sarnia has selected Alessandro Di Iorio with the second overall pick in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection.
Alessandro Di Iorio played for the Vaughan Kings U16 team this season, a team that was filled with talent. From Caleb Malhotra, to Zach Nyman, this team was stacked. That being said, Di Iorio was the Kings best forward all season long
He put up 32 points in 27 recorded games this season with Vaughan, and represented Canada at the Youth Olympic Games as well. On the international stage, Di Iorio was at his best. He scored several highlight reel goals, and he showed many flashes of what his offence could be at the professional level one day.
The right shot forward can shoot the puck for days. He has elite shot power and a hefty, yet quick release. Di Iorio's always a threat when he's got the puck on his stick in the attacking zone, and he possesses a wide variety of high-end offensive tools.
He's an all-round, mature decision maker and he has creation methods that project well to the next level. Di Iorio also plays a big game. He's listed at 5-foot-11, but he plays much bigger than that.
The Sarnia Sting are getting a forward who can shoot the puck at a junior level right now, but he's also very mature and should translate nicely to the OHL.
