The Niagara IceDogs have traded goaltender Marcus Vandenberg to the Sudbury Wolves for two third round picks (2024 & 2027).
After a 4-1 loss last night against the Erie Otters, Marcus Vandenberg is on his way up north to Sudbury.
Vandenberg is coming off winning CHL Goaltender of the Week, after he lead the IceDogs to two huge wins. One was against the league-leading Kitchener Rangers at the Aud in Kitchener.
The 2004-born netminder has gotten into thirteen games for the IceDogs this season, obtaining a 3.96 GAA and a .889% save percentage. He has shared the Niagara net with Owen Flores, who is having a fantastic season himself.
The Sudbury Wolves acquire Vandenberg to tend the net alongside import goalie Jakub Vondras. We will get the opportunity to see Vandenburg with some talented defence in front of him, like Nolan Collins, Djibril Toure, and Andre Anania.
Vandenberg gives the Wolves some much-needed depth in the goaltending department, as they have been running with U18 pick Nathan Krawchuk as their backup.
The Wolves currently sit third in the Central Division, with a 13-10-2 record. Vandenberg will give them some reassurance in the crease, and it provides another opportunity for him to battle for a professional contract.
The IceDogs are now down to Owen Flores, and current Fort Erie Meteors goaltender Charlie Burns. Burns should be expected to get the call-up. Niagara is looking weaker on the goaltending depth chart, and I wouldn't be surprised if they have another trade in the works to acquire one.
