The OHL Draft Lottery took place on Wednesday, March 27th at 7:00pm. Heading into the draw, here were the odds for each of the four teams to win first overall:
Niagara IceDogs: 40%
Windsor Spitfires: 30%
Peterborough Petes: 20%
Sarnia Sting: 10%
Despite these odds, the lottery draw took a different turn. The Niagara IceDogs were the first team revealed, at 4th overall. The IceDogs move down three spots from 1st to 4th, as they had the highest chance to win the lottery originally. This is incredibly disappointing for a team that is trying to continue their rebuild and finished as the last place team in the OHL.
The next team that was revealed was the Peterborough Petes, who stayed in their spot at number three. The Petes already have a good, young core and will build upon that with this pick at third overall.
Picking at number two is the Sarnia Sting, who moved up two big spots to pick second overall. They were given the smallest odds to win the lottery, and end up moving up two spots. They are a team with a deep, young defence core but they need a go-to forward to build around. They will look to find that with their second overall pick.
Winning the first overall selection in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection is the Windsor Spitfires. The Spitfires moved up one spot with the second best odds, and will get the honours of calling the first name at the OHL Draft. Windsor is another team who is looking to rebuild but already has some young core pieces in place. They will look to add another.
Who will be selected first overall?
