With Molendyk and Luneau ruled out of the tournament completely, Canada has been forced to call up two defenders they originally cut at selection camp; first Jorian Donovan, and now Ty Nelson.
Ty Nelson gets the call next, as Canada continues to struggle with injuries. After an overtime loss to the Americans today in pre-tournament action, Canada announced that Tristan Luneau and Tanner Molendyk will be done for the tournament. As a result, North Bay Battalion defender Ty Nelson will be on a flight to Sweden ASAP.
At Canada's Selection Camp, Nelson was definitely one of the more noticeable defenders in the offensive zone. Especially in the scrimmages, Nelson was activating constantly offensively and using his shot and passing ability from the point.
Nelson is only 5-foot-10 high wise, but he certainly plays with a physical edge. He is a nightmare for his opponents, and is often looking to get into their heads. Nelson can outmuscle opponents in the corners, but he can also throw his body around to generate some momentum for his team.
With Nelson's bite and offensive playmaking ability, he becomes a unique player for Canada. He may see some power play time during the tournament, as we saw him play the flank often during selection camp. In the OHL, he takes more shots than most other defenders and he creates a lot of offence with his shooting ability.
Entering camp, Ty Nelson was invited alongside his teammate and best friend Dom DiVincentiis, who is North Bay's starting goaltender. Both were cut from the final roster, but now Nelson will get his opportunity to join this team in Sweden.
Nelson will represent the North Bay Battalion while wearing the red and white on the international stage. Nelson is also a Seattle Kraken prospect, selected in the 2022 NHL Draft.
First Jorian Donovan got the call, and now Ty Nelson gets the call as Canada has to re-adjust their roster in preparation for Boxing Day versus Finland.
