As we start to get into the teens of the 2023 OHL Priority Selection and the second half of the first round, some players have separated themselves from this group, and some have not.
Luca Romano was Kitchener's second first round pick, and he has slowly worked his way into the Rangers lineup. He's been playing at centre and on the wing, and has spent most of this season in Kitchener's bottom six. He has 12 points through 42 games.
Romano has proven his two-way game and hockey sense at this level, being reliable in a lot of situations. In U16, Romano was all about offence and creating, but he has found a way to adapt to being a bottom six player.
Originally drafted by Owen Sound but then traded to Peterborough, Nico Addy was selected 12th. Nico Addy is the pure definition of a power forward. He can finish and make plays in tight, be a net front presence, and create havoc down low. Addy is 6-foot-5, 205-pounds, and he has found a new gear with the Petes this season.
Through 17 games with the Petes, he has 6 points and has been getting time in their top six. With Owen Sound, Addy didn't play much and didn't get many opportunities. Addy is one of four 2023 first round picks on the Petes, and he is set up for success with this young core.
Defenceman Carson Cameron has prided himself upon being an active, puck moving blueliner for the Petes in his rookie season. He has taken on a lot of responsibility as a sixteen-year-old, and plays a lot of top pair minutes.
Cameron has 19 points in 42 games from the blue line this season.
Quinn Beauchesne has only played 17 games for the Storm this season, as he broke his wrist back in November during the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. He returned in early February, and has played 7 games since.
Beauchesne is a right shot defenceman who has the complete package. He thinks the game the right way, he moves the puck well, and he's competitive.
Jeremy Martin knows how to score goals, and that is what he has been able to do early on in his OHL career. He has 10 goals in 47 games this season for the Firebirds, playing the majority of his time in the bottom six.
The Firebirds haven't been great this season, as they have been one of the bottom-feeding teams all season long. Martin gives hope for a bright future, and his finishing ability and speed are things that can be relied upon.
