Eric Young/CHL - Montreal Canadiens Prospect Owen Beck Looks More NHL-Ready Than Ever in the CHL Memorial Cup

2004-born centre Owen Beck is likely playing out his last season in major junior hockey — something that was established at the beginning of this season. He has one more eligible season remaining, but the second round pick has been on the cusp for the last two years.

Now, Owen Beck looks more NHL-ready than ever.

His skillset is being displayed on the grand stage at the Memorial Cup, where he looks like a pro player on the ice. The Montreal Canadiens have something to be excited about in May, and it isn't the playoffs.

Owen Beck's game screams maturity, and there should hardly be an adjustment period for him when he makes the Habs starting roster next season. Montreal is already bleak in depth at the centre position, and the Canadiens should be expecting Beck to fill one of those roles next season.

Beck has had quite the calendar year, from winning the OHL Championships with the Peterborough Petes last season, to playing in the World Juniors in December, and now playing in his second-consecutive Memorial Cup. Beck has had virtually all of the experiences a player can have at the major junior level — except for hoisting the Memorial Cup.

Saginaw's first line centre has been a staple for them since he joined the Spirit back at the OHL Trade Deadline, helping lead this loaded forward group.

Beck will be a natural centre at the next level, and he proves that every time he steps onto the ice in a Spirit jersey. He's dominant on the draw, he supports well low in the zone, and he never seems to get caught or be in poor position. On top of that, he has an above-average offensive skill set and offensive vision.

He's a superb passer and he's often able to feed teammates through layers of traffic with deception.

The Canadiens have an outstanding prospect on their hands. It is likely that Beck will begin in Montreal's bottom-six forward group, but it is easy to see his potential to ascend into the top-six.

Beck will look to continue to lead the Saginaw Spirit through the Memorial Cup, as they are currently up to a 2-0 record. There is an almost positive chance that they make the Memorial Cup Semi-Final, if not get a by into the Finals.

The team that will get the by into the finals will likely be decided on Wednesday, when Saginaw plays the London Knights in the final round robin game.
