The Steelheads lost 3-1 to the Barrie Colts on Friday night, in an incredibly physical matchup.
Porter Martone started the game with an early fight following a huge hit in the offensive zone. "I feel like we were playing a good game, penalty troubles started to happen, but I feel like we came out and worked," said Martone following the game.
Porter Martone — the late 2006 birthday — is not eligible until the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, but is catching many eyes early on in his junior career.
He played his U16 season (OHL Draft eligible season) with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens in the GTHL. This team was loaded with current OHL stars, Henry Mews, Anthony Cristoforo, Michael Hage, and his current teammate, and friend Jack Van Volsen. Martone described it as "one of the funnest years of my life, being able to play with all those great players is really cool."
Martone was drafted originally 5th overall by Sarnia in the OHL Priority Selection, before being acquired by the Steelheads at last year's trade deadline. Not only has Martone been a huge addition to the team, but he has been one of the better goal-scorers in the OHL this season.
When watching Martone, he not only one of the tallest players on the ice, but he plays such a mature game despite his age. His creative abilities offensively around the net combined with his strength and work ethic make him a constant offensive threat. This season he has begun to develop his defensive game, as he is getting increased time on the penalty kill.
Martone will do anything to help the team win. "I'll play D zone, I'll score some goals, and I'll fight, I just want to help the team win. I want to go out there every night and get the two points."
