Andrew Gibson heard his name called 42nd overall in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings. Now, he has officially signed his three year entry-level contract with the big club.

Gibson has spent the past two full seasons playing with the Soo Greyhounds in the OHL, being a consistent rock on their blue line. He plays a very mature game,] and he's a defender that can be relied upon in any single game situation.

His 6-foot-4, 206-pound frame at the major junior level intimidates opponents and he uses that frame to his advantage. Gibson rarely lets a forechecker past him and he's never beat along the wall. He does everything defensively that a team would want a pro defender to do, and that is exactly why Detroit drafted him.

This season, Gibson has begun to shift more focus onto his game in the offensive zone and puck moving ability — which he didn't do much in the previous season. He isn't a player that is going to make highlight reel plays in the offensive zone, but he moves the puck efficiently and he will shoot the puck if he has an open lane. Gibson also recognizes and fills open lanes in the offensive zone, even if they are low in the zone.

One common theme throughout all of Gibson's game; his hockey sense. He always finds a way to make the "right" play. He calms the game down with his presence, and his poise is impressive for a junior defender.

The Red Wings have a very mature defender on their hands — both physically and mentally. Gibson is expected to join the Grand Rapids Griffins — Detroit's AHL affiliate — for the remainder of the season on an ATO.

Gibson will get his first taste of professional hockey with the Griffins, in a league that he should transition fairly smoothly to.
