With the expected and confirmed moves of Junior A teams, the Penticton Vees of the BCHL moving to the WHL and both the Muskegon Lumberjacks and Youngstown Phantoms of the USHL having attempted to join to the OHL, there might be more changes along the way.
This would have the CHL leagues fall in line closer to the USHL, who allow four imports -- as well as two Canadians.
Gregor noted in his tweet that the WHL -- who is expanding by two franchises by 2026-27 -- is supportive of the move.
The idea for expanding the import rules is to keep the three CHL leagues competitive as they likely begin to expand southward into the United States. The race to expand has been fueled by the November ruling which has made the Canadian Hockey League players eligible for NCAA Division-I hockey.
The QMJHL, itself, has toyed with the idea of expansion southward, with commissioner Mario Cecchini speaking with THN's Ryan Kennedy on potential expansion targets.
Meanwhile, detractors of the rule might argue that the additional roster spot may take away from a spot from a North American-born player.
What do you think of the potential rule change?
