In the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, 80 prospects were selected from the Canadian Hockey League. Of those, just 12 were taken from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

There was similar concern in 1986. At the previous NHL Draft, just 15 players had been taken from the QMJHL which placed them well behind the OHL and WHL but also lagging behind the US Colleges. 

That said, scouts were confident that the 'Q' would have a much better result at the 1986 NHL Entry Draft with prospects like Jimmy Carson, Vincent Damphousse,  Jocelyn Lemieux, and Everett Sanipass available. They were dubbed the QMJHL’s Fab Four.

Carson would go on to be selected second overall in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings, one place behind first overall pick Joe Murphy.
