According to Stephane Leroux of RDS, the QMJHL is changing the name of the Selke Trophy, for the league's most gentlemanly player, to the David-Desharnais Trophy.
Desharnais played in the QMJHL for four seasons from 2003-2007, all with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, where he notched 374 points (126+248) across 262 games. Desharnais was also a three time winner of the then Selke Trophy and also won the CHL's equivalent of the trophy in 2006-07.
Despite his great play, he went undrafted. However, Desharnais was able to carve out a lengthy nine-year NHL career, where he scored 282 points (87+195) over 524 games with the Montreal Canadiens, Edmonton Oilers and the New York Rangers.
The trophy's original namesake, Frank Selke, was a former NHL general manager and Hockey Hall of Famer. However, the QMJHL's Frank J. Selke Memorial Trophy beared a striking resemblance to the NHL's Frank J. Selke Trophy -- for the top defensive forward.
Under the new name, this confusion shouldn't persist.
