Earlier today, the Edmonton Oilers announced that they've traded former QMJHL forward Xavier Bourgault, as well as Jake Chiasson, to the Ottawa Senators in return for Roby Jarventie and a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL draft.
Bourgault's statistics dipped last season with the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL, where he only put up eight goals and 20 points in 55 games. This drop comes after his 13 goals and 34 points in 62 games during his rookie season.
Before turning pro, Bourgault had success in the QMJHL. The L'Islet, Quebec native spent his whole career with the Shawinigan Cataractes, who selected him in the second round of the 2018 QMJHL draft. During that same draft, the Cataractes selected Mavrik Bourque with the third overall pick. Both would remain with the team together for four seasons, from the 2018-19 season to the 2021-22 season.
In their final QMJHL seasons, the two forwards were pivotal parts of a Cataractes team that won the league title, which is now known as the Gilles-Courteau Trophy. Bourque put up 25 points to finish first in playoff scoring for the Cataractes, with Bourgault right on his tail in second with 22 points.
However, the team fell short that same season in the 2022 Memorial Cup, which was won by the hosting Saint John Sea Dogs.
By the end of his QMJHL career, Bourgault finished over the point-per-game mark in the regular season, amassing 96 goals and 206 points in 197 career games. He also had 12 goals and 27 points in 27 playoff games.
Bourgault, who was drafted 22nd overall in 2021, will look to benefit from a change of scenery with the Senators.
