The Canadian Hockey League (CHL) announced that the Rimouski Océanic and Shawinigan Cataractes have officially indicated their intent to bid for the right to host the 2025 Memorial Cup. Both teams are members of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).
Rimouski and Shawinigan will have until November 10th to submit an official bid for the tournament. The CHL will announce the winning bid this December.
In recent days, the Moncton Wildcats announced their decision to forego a bid to host the 2025 Memorial Cup. Moncton's disclosure means that the Memorial Cup will return to the province of Quebec for the first time in 10 years.
“We are excited to have received an expression of interest from both the Rimouski Océanic and Shawinigan Cataractes, two great QMJHL clubs who have both previously hosted the Memorial Cup and enjoyed success at this event”, stated CHL President Dan MacKenzie. “In 2025, we look forward to seeing the return of our championship event to the province of Quebec for what will be the 105th edition of the Memorial Cup.”
The Rimouski Océanic and Shawinigan Cataractes have each hosted the tournament previously. The Océanic acted as hosts in 2009 while the Cataractes played host to the Memorial Cup in 1985 and 2012.
In June, the Quebec Remparts hoisted the Cup after defeating the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-0 in the tournament final. It was the fourth straight championship for the QMJHL.
The 2024 Memorial Cup will be held in Saginaw, Michigan from May 23 to June 2, 2024.
