The Saint John Sea Dogs put pen to paper with their third first rounder from the 2024 QMJHL draft, defenseman Cameron Chartrand, signing him today to a QMJHL development deal.
Chartrand, 17, is a 6-foot-1, 205 pound right shot defenseman who captained Bishop Kearney Selects 16U AAA team -- notching an impressive 45 points (6+39) across 49 games. The Saint-Lazare, QC native also appeared in two games with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the USHL this season, going point-less.
The Sea Dogs' 19th overall selection opted not to sign with the team earlier as to not forego his NCAA eligibility. He would go on to commit with Boston College for the 2027/28 season.
Head coach and general manager Travis Crickard had the opportunity to coach his prospect at the U17 World Challenge, where Chartrand had two assists in four games, and spoke wonders about the team's new signing.
"It is clear that we are not only adding a top defenceman from the 2008 draft class, but an extremely humble young man with a tremendous hunger to improve and be a great hockey player," he said.]
Meanwhile team president Trevor Georgie was all colours when describing what they have in the young blueliner. "We considered him the best defenceman in his age group in his draft year, and we are thrilled that he has decided to continue to develop here as a Sea Dog," he said.
Notably, the first defenseman off the board in the 2024 QMJHL draft was second overall pick Benjamin Cosette-Ayotte, who has 24 points (4+20) across 52 games with the Foreurs this season.
With Chartrand's move to the QMJHL. that leaves 10th overall selection Tynan Lawrence (Chicoutimi) as the only first rounder from the 2024 class without a contract.
