Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins have come to terms on an extension that'll see Crosby staying in the Steel City for at least two more seasons, at $8.7 million per season.
Crosby, 37, is coming off of a 94-point (42+52) season -- a five year best.
'Sid the Kid' was still under contract for this season, with or without the extension, as he is on the 12th year of his $104.4 million dollar deal, which averaged $8.70 million a season.
Given his tenure with the Penguins and his seeming willingness to stay, it was a surprise when he wasn't extended outright on July 1st.
However, the two sides came together and settled on a familiar number.
Crosby has been an all-time great, amassing 1596 points (592+1004) over 1272 games across 20 seasons -- all in Pittsburgh.
He's pretty much done it all, winning three Stanley Cups, two MVPs, two Art Ross', two Richards, three player MVPs, three Ted Lindseys and being a member of the elusive Triple Gold Club (Stanley Cup, World Championship Gold, Olympic Gold).
It's likely that under this new deal, Crosby will look to surpass Mario Lemieux's 1723 points as the Penguins' franchise point leader.
Before turning pro, he was a legend in the QMJHL where he tallied 303 points (120+183) across only 121 games with the Rimouski Océanic, leading the entire CHL in points twice and even winning a QMJHL championship in 04-05.
