We look back to a 1978 article from The Hockey News Archive on Quebec Remparts captain Kevin Lowe.

Kevin Lowe is a six-time Stanley Cup champion as a defenseman for the Edmonton Oilers and was named to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2020. Following his playing career, Lowe was a coach, general manager and president of hockey operations for the Oilers.

Prior to that weighty resume, Lowe spent three years in the QMJHL with the Quebec Remparts. In an article from the THN Archive dated December 8, 1978, Lowe had blossomed into a two-way defenseman, playing in his final season with the Remparts.

Lowe had rejected a contract offer with the Birmingham Bulls of the WHA, rival to the NHL at the time. Instead Lowe decided to return to Quebec City as the Remparts captain and continue to mature ahead of the 1979 NHL Draft.

“I discussed it with my family,” Lowe was quoted in the article. “We figured that I needed one more year of junior. It was also possible that I would play badly at Birmingham and that would hurt me in the NHL draft. In junior, I knew I’d have a good year.”
