Report: Sharks Open To Trading 5 Defensemen cover image

The Sharks are reportedly willing to hear trade offers for five of their defensemen.

The San Jose Sharks recently made it clear that they are open to adding to their roster, as they brought in Kiefer Sherwood from the Vancouver Canucks. It is understandable that the Sharks are willing to be buyers, as they have been a great surprise this season and are in the Western Conference playoff race.

However, based on a new report, the Sharks are also not against moving some of their current players as well.

According to The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta, the Sharks are willing to hear trade offers for pending unrestricted free agents (UFAs) Mario Ferraro, Timothy Liljegren, John Klingberg, Vincent Desharnais, and Nick Leddy.

Ferraro has been a popular name in the rumor mill for a while, and he undoubtedly has the potential to generate interest from contenders because he is a steady top-four defenseman who plays a heavy game. Yet, with the Sharks being in the playoff race, trading an important defenseman like Ferraro would come with some real risk. In 49 games this season, he has four goals, 12 points, and 84 hits.

Teams looking for more depth on their right side could consider taking a flier on the 26-year-old Liljegren. In 37 games this season with the Sharks, he has recorded nine assists and 77 blocks.

Klingberg could be a solid pickup for a playoff club looking for more offense from the point. The veteran blueliner has been a nice fit on the Sharks' roster this season, recording nine goals and 17 points in 36 games thus far.

Contenders are always on the hunt for big and tough right-shot defensemen, and Desharnais fits that description. The 6-foot-7 blueliner has played in 22 games this season with the Sharks, where he has one goal, three points, 35 hits, and 38 penalty minutes.

As for Leddy, the Sharks recently placed the veteran defenseman on waivers and could have trouble finding a trade partner for him without salary retention. In 19 games this season with the Sharks, he has recorded four assists and a minus-9 rating.
