Earlier on July 17, the Flames re-signed three players to two-way contracts that included left wing/centre Rory Kerins.

The Caledon, Ontario native scored 33 goals, a career-best, and 61 points, which was the second-highest amongst prospects behind league goal-scoring champion Matej Blumel last season with the AHL Wranglers.

As mentioned many, many times before, this team is going to rely on young superstars and Kerins is no exception.

Whether he will be able to contend for a roster spot on opening-night is hazy, but at best, his talents suggests he will be called up quickly from the AHL during the season.

At the expense of Ryan Lomberg.

A 30-year-old Lomberg does not fit the youth movement age-group that GM Craig Conroy envisions. And even if Conroy were to make exceptions like in the cases of Nazem Kadri, Mikael Backlund, Jonathan Huberdeau, the Richmond Hill, Ontario native hasn't proven to be a leader or a game-changer as the stats above show.

Kerins, on the other hand, would benefit from being a bottom-six contributor primarily as a left-wing

It would be very interesting to see his chemistry with centres Morgan Frost and Martin Pospisil, both lefties and motivated youngsters who signed fresh new deals with the Flames earlier in the off-season, and have more games than him under their belts.

Kerins already made his NHL debut on Jan. 13, and wasted little time making an impact. He put up two assists in his first-ever game against Chicago and finished his five-game stint with Calgary notching four points (all assists) and a +3 rating.

There is definitely plenty more where that came from.
