The Carolina Hurricanes have a loyal and dedicated fanbase that generally loves and supports them through thick and thin, but even the 'Caniacs' have their limits.
Game 2 was that limit.
After a terrible opening frame, that saw the Hurricanes with as many shots on goal as goals against (3), the fanbase let them have it.
The boos came hot and heavy heading into the first intermission and it wasn't the last time they came out either as the fans kept it up throughout the game and especially toward the end.
It was one of the most embarrassing losses in franchise history, a 5-0 drumming at home by the Florida Panthers after having already lost the series opener.
The Canes knew they needed to be better, but they folded as quickly as they possibly could.
And not only were there the boos, but the fans also started a "Shoot the puck!" chant on multiple occasions that echoed throughout Lenovo Center.
And they were justified in that chant too.
"What did we have, seven shots at that point?," said captain Jordan Staal on the chant. "So I don't blame them. It's been a staple of our team for so long. We did give up a few good opportunities to shoot and passed up on a couple plays that were not bad plays, but the way the puck's been bouncing and stuff, it looked ugly. Our M.O. has always been to shoot first, ask questions later and we weren't doing that tonight. We didn't create enough chances or really anything."
Thursday night's game featured the lowest amount of shots on goal from the Hurricanes (17) since the start of the Rod Brind'Amour era (2018-19).
In fact, it was just the 10th time ever under Brind'Amour, regular season or playoffs, that the team has had fewer than 20 shots on goal.
The Hurricanes are struggling something mighty right now after having a relative cakewalk to the Eastern Conference final with two straight five-game series against the New Jersey Devils and Washington Capitals.
They head to Florida now as they look to change their fortunes and avoid yet another Eastern Conference final sweep.
