Welcome to this week's edition of THN's WHL Game of the Week. In this weekly column, we break down one of the most exciting games from the weekend that was. This week, we examine a thrilling come-from-behind win by the Wenatchee Wild over the Portland Winterhawks.
These U.S. Division rivals did not disappoint Saturday night as they played one of the best games of the WHL season. It didn't take long for Portland to open the scoring as just 50 seconds in, Josh Davies scored his 18th of the season to put the home team up 1-0. The Winterhawks would add a power play goal late as Marcus Nguyen scored his eight of the season to send Portland to the locker room up 2-0.
Wenatchee would finally get on the board 2:55 into the second, thanks to Dawson Seitz's third of the year. While the goal gave the Wild a momentum boost, it wasn't long before the Winterhawks' offence again took over.
At 4:34 of the second period, Davies once again found the back of the net, this time on the power play for his 19th of the season to make the game 3-1. The Winterhawks pushed the lead to three at 13:57 as Tyson Yaremko scored his first WHL goal and finished off the three-goal period, with Diego Buttazzoni scoring his 12th at 17:25 to push the lead to 5-1. It looked like Portland would cruise to a dominant win, but as we discovered, Conor Geekie had other plans.
After Matthew Savoie cut the lead to 5-2 with his tenth 2:54 into the third, Geekie took over the game. The Arizona Coyotes prospect scored a hat trick in under six minutes to push the game to overtime. Geekie would finish the night with a highlight reel goal in the extra frame as the Wild pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in franchise history. With the win, Wenatchee moved to 18-8-3 on the year, while Portland dropped their record to 15-8-1-1.
