Previewing the Lethbridge Hurricanes' 2024-25 WHL season.
Welcome to The Hockey News 2024-25 season preview series. From August 29 to September 20, THN's WHL duo will examine some of the biggest storylines facing each team this season. Today's edition is focused on the Lethbridge Hurricanes, who will be hungry to avenge a "swift" exit from the 2024 WHL Playoffs.
2023-24 Statistics:
Regular Season Record: 33-28-7-0, 73 Points (4th Central Division)
Playoffs: Defeated by Swift Current Broncos 4-0
Key Departures: Trae Wilke (F), Sean Tschigerl (F)
Key Additions: Trae Johnson (F)
Lethbridge, despite getting swept by Swift Current in round one of the 2024 playoffs, appear to be running a very similar roster back in 2024-25.
One of the major pieces of business for the Hurricanes was naming a new captain, and Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Noah Chadwick stepped up to the plate, donning the "C" for the upcoming campaign. It is yet to be seen who his supporting cast will be, as the entirety of the leadership group has aged out of the league. Chadwick will be filling some big shoes, taking former captain Joseph Arntsen's place, but the 19-year-old forward can and will develop his own style of leadership as he enters his second to last WHL-eligible season.
Lethbridge has had a relatively silent offseason, making just one eligible signing; Trae Johnson, from the Kelowna Rockets.
Once again, a core group consisting of Miguel Marques, the aforementioned Chadwick, Brayden Edwards, and Logan Wormald will be looked upon to lead the team offensively this season. As for forward youth, Gavin Lesiuk (2008) looks to put in a full season and continue his momentum from a shortened U17 season.
Between the pipes, Harrison Meneghin will likely be the go-to. Posting a .919 save percentage through 53 appearances last season, the Tampa Bay Lighting selection looks poised for another big season.
While there were not many changes to the Hurricanes roster this summer, they have the potential and growth to make another playoff appearance in April. However, it starts with the preseason, and Lethbridge is already underway; defeating the Medicine Hat Tigers 4-1 to kick off their schedule.
