The Rockets forward helped save a man from drowning on December 7.

Ty Hurley is a hero, plain and simple. On December 7, 2023, the Kelowna Rockets forward was waiting for his teammates in a hotel lobby when he noticed a fully clothed man submerging himself continuously in the pool. After the man didn't come up for air, Hurley jumped into action, pulling him out of the water and onto the floor.

"He submerged himself for over 30 seconds," said Hurley, recounting the moment with Regan Bartel. "I am saying to myself, 'Oh shoot, we have got to get him out of the water.' He was trying to drown himself."

After pulling the man out of the water, Hurley sprung into action and started performing CPR. He had picked up this skill a few years earlier while training to become a lifeguard. After 15 chest compressions, the man started breathing again and was later taken away via ambulance to the hospital.

This is a great example of why everyone should take a first aid or CPR course. You never know when it will come in handy or save someone's life, as it did in this case for Hurley. Even though he is only 19 years old, he was able to remain calm, follow the steps he was taught in training and eventually save this man's life. While he does not consider himself a hero, telling Bartel, "I feel like I did what anyone would have done, " he saved this man's life and deserves recognition for the heroic act.
