Team Canada announced Saturday that Moose Jaw Warriors forward and Seattle Kraken prospect Jagger Firkus would be added to their 2024 World Juniors. Canada opted to travel to Sweden with open roster spots, allowing them to call up players as the tournament progressed. Firkus now joins teammates Brayden Yager and Denton Mateychuk.
Initially invited to Team Canada's selection camp in mid-December, Firkus was one of the last cuts on the team. He played in both games against the U Sports team but failed to record a point. In three games since returning to Moose Jaw, he has tallied six assists and recorded 11 shots on goal.
Firkus has been one of the most consistent point producers in the WHL this season. Currently on a ten-game point streak, he also had a seven-game goal streak earlier on in the campaign. He has recorded a point in all but three games this season and sits fourth in the WHL with 59 points in 32 games.
Team Canada plays their final game of the preliminary round on Sunday versus Germany. While Firkus may make it to Gothenburg in time, odds are his first game will come on Tuesday during the quarterfinals. Game time for Sunday's game is set for 10:30 AM PT, with the result deciding who Canada will face in the quarterfinals.
