Looking back at the 1983-84 season, when the WHL decided to change the rules around fighting.

In this edition of The Hockey News, we look back at the 1983-84 season and the impact the new instigator rule had on the WHL. Written by Ben Kuzma, this column looks at the WHL's attempt to prevent fighting but discusses some of the issues, including "turtling" by players trying to draw penalties. Included is also a look at two new rules for the WHL at the time that attempted to stop biting and gouging another in the facial area.

Sticking with the WHL, make sure to check out the previous page for the "Micron Junior Players Of The Week." In this edition, the award was given to center Todd Bergen of the Prince Albert Raiders. Read about his fantastic week that included eight goals spread over two games.

Lastly, make sure to check out The Hockey News' People Choice All-Stars as voted by fans and the PWHA. While some choices stayed the same, like Wayne Gretzky and Ray Bourque making each conference's first team, there is plenty of variety between the readers and the writers. This is a great poll as it shows how the media and fans view the NHL differently.
