Matthew Savoie has looked virtually unstoppable since being reassigned to the Wenatchee Wild. The Buffalo Sabres prospect has 24 points in 11 games and was riding a nine-game point streak before heading to Team Canada World Juniors selection camp. Whether it is at even strength, on the power play or even shorthanded, he is a game-breaker who already has more points than 85% of the WHL.
Outside of the point production, the addition of Savoie has vaulted the Wild into one of the best teams in the WHL. In the 11 games he has played, Wenatchee has won eight and failed to collect at least one point only once. Currently sitting fourth in the league by point percentage, they also have the best record when it comes to a team's last ten games. Lastly, the Wild are averaging five goals a game and have become one of the most dynamic offences in the league. With Conor Geekie by his side, they have proven to be the WHL's best duo and are a nightmare for anyone tasked with shutting them down this season.
Lastly, a breakdown of Savoie's point total indicates just how big of an impact he has had on Wenatchee. Ten of his 13 helpers have been primary assists, while three have been secondary assists. That means 21 of his 24 points this year have been primary points. What this means is that not only is he producing at an incredible pace, but he is playing an important factor every time he is on the ice for a goal. A player who can beat goaltenders in a multitude of ways, he is one of the most dangerous players in the league when the puck is on his stick.
While Savoie has been one of the best players in the WHL over the last two years, it seems that he has taken his game to the next level. It is clear his time in the AHL and NHL has benefited him as he looks to post his third consecutive 90-point season. Expected to be a big part of Team Canada at the World Juniors; it will be worth tracking his progress when he returns to Wenatchee in January to see if he can build on his strong start to the season.
